Rated 4.86/5 based on 7 reviews

Joining forces with a group of notorious outlaws wasn’t part of the plan, especially not when one of them is determined to charm her out of her uniform at every turn. Working with the criminals might have been worth it if their efforts had saved the emperor, but it seems he’s not the rightful heir... More

This is my favorite book in the Emperor's Edge series. The Emperor's Edge books are known for breakneck action, this novel though 'slower' than the typical book is still action packed, but we get to see a little more of the characters, they get a chance to breath.

Why aren't there 10 stars to rate? 5 stars is definitely not sufficient to convey how much I enjoy every book in this series!

So far I have loved all the Emperor's Edge books! Quite the tale and imagination with all the interplay of characters and the trouble they get themselves into/and out of. This Novella wasn't any different...loved the new direction Yara and Mal are headed. Will Sicarius and his son, Sespian ever be close??? Hopefully we shall see!

Excellent book. Really enjoyed the interplay between Maldynado and Yara, and, of course, the continued progression of Am and Sic's relationship - loved the smoke-stack scene!

I just loved the novella - i just wish it was longer - and i can hardly wait for the next installment. It is so good to see sicarius open up more with amaranthe. It leaves you addicted wanting for more of their interactions. This was a breakup between Yara's point of view and Amaranthe's of course. And it gives you a better understanding of Yara and humanizes her to an extent where you finally start accepting her as part of the team. Great job by the author!

Don't let the "novella" descriptor fool you—the 56k words puts it into "novel" territory, per SFWA definitions. The "novella" is only comparative; the main entries in the series are twice that or more.

Even so, Beneath the Surface isn't some filler or spin-off story to tide the fan over between books. It's a transition between book 5 and book 6, and must be read as such—

And for that, it's as witty and enjoyable as the rest of the series. ^_^
