... Some years later he met Kathrin by chance, found out where she lived and decided to remedy the situation...
What chances does he have to get it right this time?
"‘You didn’t answer the question,’ he reminded.
‘Question? Was there any question?’ asked she as if completely had forgotten about it. She needed time to think over the right answer, since he was so insistent about it.
‘Well, as I remember,’ Kathrin started and then made a small gulp from her own goblet. ‘You know, it’s just occurred to me. A couple of weeks ago you told me that you had no place to... stay overnight... You didn’t want to bother your parents for they had suffered enough due to your painful divorce. Moreover, they would be upset seeing you idle. To stay for a while at your ex-wife’s place sounded completely outrageous, for had anyone found out about it, rumours would have been spread all over the world,’ she smiled at the thought of his habit to exaggerate his importance. ‘And it would have been, of course, not in your favour... After some profound consideration, I suppose, you eventually came to my place declaring that there were not enough friends of yours in this awfully hectic life, with whom you could have shared a flat, except... your enemy... It sounded strange, I must say…’
‘You’re not my enemy,’ perplexedly muttered Arcady. ‘I could never allow myself even to think that way... Why do you say such a thing?’
‘Remember, you told me that a man and a woman cannot be just friends, since it is not natural. What is natural then? Either to be lover, or enemy… Your own words. So, what you suggest me to choose?’
Arcady put his glass on the table and tossed the hair.
‘People tend to become wiser as time goes by,’ quietly said he without any hope to find affirmation from Kathrin.
‘Some of them... yes... But there is a fat chance you are among that kind of people.’"
