This book is about making past programmers software available. To use these past efforts a computer program had to be developed. This program is referred to as BASTRAN: BASic TRANsformer. Attention is paid to the history of the programming language "BASIC". Different versions are discussed, also those used on a desktop computer to develop applications for hand-held devices. More
The book is intended for those interested in accessing old programs for purely historical purposes and for those using old programs in a new working environment. Ample attention is paid to the portability problem, its history and how people tried to solve it. The program, BASTRAN, can be seen as an interface to access programs, written in a specific version of the BASIC language. It makes old software accessible to study the history of software development. It transforms programs at a minimal cost and insights may be gained on the epistemological level in problem solving through a computer.
