Cat On A Leash

Rated 5.00/5 based on 8 reviews
There is a fine line between admiration and stalking. The story of a persistent cat, the couple she “dated”, and their travels aboard the motor-vessel Wild Blue. The 50-something couple retired early, sold their home & photography business, scooped up the cat, and hit the waterways. Life isn’t always easy onboard a 25 foot boat, but it is an interesting escape. Featuring Molly the cat.

About James Bathurst

James Bathurst is the story-teller behind Cat On A Leash.  Known as Captain Jim to his audience on the internet, Jim’s style is off-beat and folksy.  Writing isn’t his “day job;”  Jim was a photographer for 32 years.  During that time, he wrote articles for many photography magazines, taking often dry trade topics and making them humorous.

Jim retired from a career in photography at age 52 to take his wife, Joan (also known as “the Blonde”) and Molly, the boat cat, traveling.  It was about that time that he started a cruising thread on a boating forum; “The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and Crew” soon became the most visited site on that forum with over 200,000 views.

“It was a natural transition,” Jim says, “I have been writing a travel newsletter since the mid-90s.  I enjoy telling a good story, and the story of the amazing Molly is pretty captivating.”

Jim’s career also included presenting seminars to professional organizations.  The topics ranged from business-building and promoting to photographic techniques and customer service.  “I was a musician in my mis-spent youth; I'm OK with being in front of a crowd.  It’s instant feedback - you know right now if what you’re saying is relevant.”

Master of Photography, Photographic Craftsman, and an internationally affiliated photographic juror (for photography competitions), Jim also received the National Award from the Professional Photographers of America for service to the industry.  “Creating a dynamic image is about story-telling.  You decide where you want the viewers’ eyes to go; you see it in your head before you capture it in the camera.  Writing is similar for me; it isn’t about reporting the facts, it’s about unfolding the story,” Jim relates.

The “captain” part mentioned above isn’t just a nickname - Jim holds a Master Captain US Coast Guard license, a commercial pilot’s license, and a spirit of adventure.

Bought and read through the same day. I knew about Molly from past years of reading Jim's posts online, but not until I read the book did I know the whole story and truly understand what an integral part of the family Molly the Cat became. Great tale (no pun intended!), & highly recommended if you like animals, travel, *or* boats!

Just finished "Cat on a Leash". This is a terrific heart warming book that will appeal to both critter lovers and boating enthusiasts alike as well as adventurous souls. It is well written and uniquely and occassionally provides the events from Molly's, the cat, perspective. Molly was truly a member of Jim and Joan Bathurst's family in boat and RV travel from one end of the Country to the other and even into Canada. That Molly was willing to walk on a leash brough attention to her where ever she went. Especially compelling is the early part of the story describing how Molly selected Jim and Joan as members of her family and the months it took for this to become reality.

An epic adventure and a page-turner. Most enjoyable. Bathhurst tells a cat's tale, but he also gives excellent insight into why cruising a small boat may be some of the best fun a couple (and their cat!) can have. A delightful read. I can't wait to reread Cat on a Leash, riding at anchor in a quiet cove.

The author and Molly take the reader on an exciting adventure. The reader is treated to insights of the humans and cat along the way. Bought this book the first day it was available, read it immediately. I felt like I already knew Molly although I didn't get a chance to meet her nor her parents (yet). I do know Jim and Joan from the boat site he mentions (CBrats)and have read about her there along with their many exploits. If you miss pictures in the book, you can go to that website and see many of her and them or go to his blog which is full of rich stories and beautiful pictures.

This is a well written book and flows from chapter to chapter. The perspective of the kitty cannot be matched! I hope it becomes more widely available. I cannot wait for the sequel, "Living with Izzie".
