Sadly, there are few authors today who can turn out such interesting, descriptive, evocative, & humorous phrases.
I like the story's blend of mystery, history, family, & a delicious dollop of magic. I found it engaging & interesting, with characters very worthy of a sequel or two. Mr Nicholls has clearly put significant effort into getting the period facts & feel just right ... well done !!

If you love descriptive wordplay this is the book for you. The author is obviously a master of the language and has a sly sense of humour. An engaging story. Loved it.

A complex plot with an historical basis that makes you want to keep reading. The characters are well developed and interesting. Perhaps the ending is a little too drawn out but otherwise this comes greatly recommended, especially for those keen on historical dramas.
