Modern Condition on the surface is a monster story told from the monster’s point of view. It goes beyond being a simple record of vengeful acts by exploring the rationale adhere to as justification for the violence undertaken. At its core it challenges the old truism, “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”, with its own claim that men that do nothing are an evil akin to any other.
For the Villagers the hanging closed a day best forgotten. For their victim it was an act that needed to be justified.
