Kelly Quinn, narrator of Cindy Callaghan’s Just Add a Famous TV Chef, is a seventh grade student in Home Ec with an enjoyably convincing voice. She’s also the custodian of a curious recipe book found hidden in her attic, but that’s another story—Just Add Magic perhaps.
When budget cuts threaten the Home Ec program, Kelly’s teacher comes up with an intriguing idea and the students search for sad ingredients, like green vegetables and stinky cheese. Oddly enough, the results sound quite enticing, but even more intriguing is the plan to save the Home Ec program, which results in students cooking for the whole assembly and three excellent, teen-oriented meals with recipes pleasingly offered to readers at the back of the book. It also results in a surprise meeting with a famous TV Chef, but you’ll have to read the story to find out why.
Good fun. Good food. Great narrative voice. And now I’m hungry.
