About Jenn Carpenter

Jenn Carpenter is an author and freelance writer who lives in Grand Ledge, Michigan with her husband and their four sons. Urged into writing by her wild imagination as a child, Jenn put her award winning writing career on hold for over a decade to raise a family. She blew the dust off her keyboard the day her husband deployed to Iraq, inspired to start writing again by the beautiful tragedy of sending a loved one off to war. Jenn’s memoir One Army Wife's Tale is her first published work. Hardwood Floors is her first novel.

Jenn Carpenter's first novel, Hardwood Floors, is a wonderful read. She illustrates a mastery of literary techniques with her use of imagery, flashback, irony and symbolism. The very title, Hardwood Floors, connotes a homey comfort and escape from the emotional rigors of life. The main character is flawed in that her emotional overreaction to situations she doesn't fully comprehend leads to tragic misunderstandings that have far reaching consequences. All of the characters and their relationships to each other are fully delineated and believable. Even though she is flawed, the main character is a sympathetic one. This is a love story on many levels. The storyline expertly switches from the present to the past, using dream sequences to bridge the time lapses. Suspense is created in several incidents, keeping the reader's interest and always posing the tantalizing question, "And then what happened ?"
