About Elyse Cregar

Having served for several years as a Licensed Battlefield Guide at the Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, author Elyse Cregar writes:

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the site of the turning point battle of the Civil War, is a place that one must walk and explore. Rolling hills, strange coincidences, tragic decisions, brilliant decisions, human foibles, errors in judgment, moments of triumph and more are all a part of the history of this great battlefield. As I studied the very human stories of soldiers, commanders and townspeople, and as I led park visitors on the typical two-hour Battlefield Guide tours, I was constantly humbled by the events that took place across some twenty-five square miles. Even the name Gettysburg evokes images of bloody triumph and profoundly terrible loss. It was with this sense of the immensity of the battle and its implications for freedom that I was inspired to write Hanna’s story.

My story is based on actual events that took place before and during this great battle. Hanna's Courage has been thoroughly checked for historical accuracy by Miss Debra Novotny, a Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide since 1975 and a teacher of American History at the Gettysburg High School for 35 years(ret.)

I have been a Library-Media Specialist for over twenty years: at the Swampscott Middle School in Swampscott, Massachusetts, and the Hanover Middle School in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and most recently as the District Librarian at the Moscow Public School District in Moscow, Idaho.

In April of 2003 I was awarded a competitive scholarship to participate in the Lincoln Seminar, Civil War Institute held at Gettysburg College, by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York City.

An active member of the American Association of School Librarians and the American Library Association, my articles on school library practices have been published in School Library Journal and Knowledge Quest, a journal of the American Association of School Librarians.
