This book is required reading for any author or artist who is trying to create an online presence an it's written by the guy who created and manages this web site - Like they say, take your investment advice from the rich, well you should create your social media marketing and online identity with advice from a person who has succeed at both - Mark Coker. There is so much to do when it comes to creating your online presence, what with Twitter, FaceBook, Instagram, Google, Amazon, iBooks, eReaders, on demand printing, mobile apps, blogs and websites and then there's multimedia videos, audio, graphics, games. It would be easy to spin your wheels and waste your time posting and everything else you can do online, to have countless hours add up to nothing. But in this book, there are many concrete actions and ideas that help direct all the energy you may have into key activities that are more likely to create success for you and your brand online. I see so many writers out there who create this huge following of other writers, they join all these writer's groups, and post about writing all the time, but in my opinion it is an epic fail for writers to connect with other writers online. Like Coker says in this book, set yourself apart and find readers (actual people who enjoy the kinds of books you write). Make connections with the actual people who are genuinely interested in your niche, and establish yourself as a personality (an expert) in that niche. Figure out what the people who are interested in your niche actually want. Give the people who are interested in your niche something genuine and new. This is the best advice I've had about creating an online identity.

Anyone interested in marketing and selling on line or building a following on social media should read this book. There are so many great ideas that I would not have thought of, plus the author goes into many details that you might not think of. Mark has been touring the world physically and virtually promoting smashwords, and he has no doubt met many creative and intelligent people who have shared their breakthrough ideas with him . . . and now he's sharing all the secrets to success right here.

Although I had two adult eBooks books published with Smashwords sometime ago I had not followed up with the marketing aspect. I have now published some children’s books and have been adding them to Smashwords. It’s great to see the books in the Ibookstore and on Kobo. I am glad that Mark has done these podcast; I find them helpful and I am sure by employing some of his tips, my books will be more successful.

A really helpful book. Some of the tips seemed quite obvious while others opened my eyes to the ideas I would never have thought of otherwise. The book covers everything from the very basics to the more professional techniques. Anyone could use it, even people who are completely new to social media and the Internet in general.
Maybe in the next edition you could add more details about social media marketing, running campaigns, creating viral content etc.
I recommend this book to fellow authors. Unless you are a professional marketer and PR specialist, you'll find some useful information there that will help you promote your book and connect with your audience.
I've always been quite sceptical about marketing, viewing it as something almost evil (manipulating people to buy things they don't need through emotions etc.) and extremely boring to do. That's why I've always been putting it off. Now I can finally see it's something else completely, so thank you, Mark!

I have handled so many marketing ideal books for sometime now, but none of them seems to proof wonders like Smashwords Marketing Guide. I was able to learn so many things which I have not learn over the years back, before I came into writing, just by reading this book.

After reading this guide, I was able to setup some social media accounts for marketing my books, and I have learnt so many ways to influence people and gain readership. There are a lot to learn from this book.

When one applies the information documented in this book, he/she can easily hit the bestselling author. Thank you Mark Cooker.

Good book with a lot of ideas you haven't thought of.
Might need an update, though - found some outdated info.
For example, Tip #10 includes a suggestion to check for a list of book bloggers in your genre. (They discontinued that function in 2014 unfortunately). Otherwise worth the time to read.

This book has many great ideas but it was last updated in 2013 and most of it seems a bit dated. Sorry for being a buzz kill on this book but it needs an update. It occurred to me that there may not be any updates to make bc the 'self publishing' boom may be over. I don't know, but is it possible that self publishing was exciting back when social media (FB, Twitter, etc.) were new? Maybe everyone had a shot at writing a best seller back then. Don't give up though. This book did motivate me to tell my story and promote it. There are great stories out there and who knows, your story could be the next 50 Shades or The Martian.

I am following Marc's suggestions to the 'T' and getting amazing results in just five weeks. I created the simplest free website -- I created a free blog at Goggle -- backpacker And a twitter account @backpackerbill. I posted ten times on my blog. And five twitters. And here are the results.

Week of February 17 12 views of my website.

Week ending March 17 706 views.

Week ending March 24 5,367 views.

In five weeks a total of 6899 viewers, 74 compliments, 17 collectors, two Twitter followers, 7 samplings of my book at Smashwords, and three viewers who I had emailed responded and said they bought my book. One says she has recommended my book to her friends.

Is that viral? And I have just begun, doing simple things that are suggested in Mark Coker's Smashwords Book Marketing Guide.

Furthermore, since my book is scheduled for publishing on June 1, I have no idea what sort of sales I have at retailers, nor any indication how many have sampled its text at these retailers.

Thanks, Mark. Nothing like what a little success can do for me!

This is a great free and easy to read book about marketing your book written by Smashwords founder, Mark Coker. I have yet to publish my book, but am doing so soon, so am doing research to help with the marketing. Coker's book has lots of great tips, all of them free, about how to market your book.

The first half of the book gives a bit of a history of self publishing and outlines what Smashwords does, how books are distributed. I have seen a lot of complaints that this book is just a big advertizement for Smashwords, but I enjoyed learning more about what they do -- and it is a free book put out by Smashwords. Also, don't read that part of the book if you don't like it.

Next, Coker explains about book marketing and social media, how hyperlinks work, building a platform, and how authors can help each other. This was a useful overview, especially for someone like me who is diving right in and trying to understand how it all works.

Finally, there are 41 free marketing tips. You can pick and choose what to do and what will work for you. Some are easy, like updating your email signature, and some are more involved like, publish more than one book. This is a great check list of things to do, compiled in an easy list with clear instructions on how to do them and why they are a good idea.

Overall, I got a lot out of this book -- and it gets the juices going for how to market, something I'm not familiar with at all. I appreciate Coker putting this book out and especially that it is free. I didn't always agree with his advice, but it gave me a place to start and lots to think about.

I did what many people do and that is, I quickly submitted my five eBooks to Amazon and clicked drm thinking I wanted my products Safe and Secure. Little did I know what it really meant.

The next day I heard about Smashwords and read two of Mark Coker's Free books on eBook publishing and marketing.

Mark Coker is very wise and shares my vision and attitudes over paper back publishers. Had I read his material I could have saved myself a lot of money already and I could have published my 5 eBooks here as well. Now I have to wait 90 days and possibly miss out on the promotions and reviews I may be getting.

He is absolutely right. Offer it for free with links inside the book, or offer it free for a limited time.

One eBook "Speaking In Tongues and Other Charismatic Gifts" available only from Amazon at this time I really do want to go viral and as soon as the 90 days are up at Amazon I'll be here at Smashwords; putting my books where I can see another author truly cares.

thanks Mark for your insight

Someday, I'd like to thank Mark Coker, in person, for everything he has done for me. One of the first guides I read prior to publishing my first eBook in March of 2011 was Mr. Coker's free "Style Guide," (How to format, produce and publish an ebook.)
My knowledge and experience in publishing and marketing a book at that time was zip, zero, nada, nothing, and the style guide was a great place to start. I quickly downloaded this book, "Smashwords Book Marketing Guide," and everything else Mark and Smashwords offered.
Since March of 2011, my ebook, "Emergency Laughter" has sold over 17,000 copies and is a TOP 100 bestselling medical humor ebook. I'm sorry to say, that even though virtually none of those sales, were directly through smashwords, the knowledge and techniques I learned here, played a huge roll in my success.
My point is, that it all STARTED with this book and all the other vital information Mark Coker provided, to a then unemployed and broke humor writer. I highly recommend all of his guides. I still use them as a checklist, so I know, all my bases are covered. Thank you Mr. Coker!

The Smashwords Book Marketing Guide is a fantastic resource. It's the 'Bucket List' of ebook marketing; I find myself returning to it again and again to make sure I'm covering all the bases. It's my personal 'do-list.' This guide is even better than Mr. Coker's other free gem, The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success, which is also a must-have. The Smashwords Book Marketing Guide is a lean and mean instruction manual for turning over every stone. Thank you for this great resource!

Everyone's heard of the guy that wrote an overnight best seller. Mark Coker, though, show how reality is far different.

Even for the "overnight sensation" there would have been months/years of toil, doing the small things, pushing their wheel barrow slowly up what seems like an insurmountable hill.

For a first time author like myself, this book was a great introduction into the hard-yards of marketing. I've started a blog, tried to tap into social media and will keep these simple keys in the forefront of my thinking as I tried to peddle my wares.

To all budding authors, be sure you realise... writing is only half the story :)

This book made it very easy for me to re-format my manuscript into a doc required by smashwords, and to understand what happens after uploading. Special thanks for info about how to check the different formats. One thing is missing, though, for me, which is a mention of the behaviour of book-marks and internal hyperlinks: these don't seem to work in HTML or in Java, and in Java even illustrations don't show. Now I must be sitting on edge waiting for what'll be accepted and in which formats. Besides, no apostrophes, quotation marks and the like work in plain text or .rtl either, which we have to be warned about too. But I'll see how it'll pan out. Even then, great many thanks to Mark Coker!

I found it so helpful as it filled in the blanks for me and tied everything together.
I also liked the fact Mark uses Blogger as a blogging platform. Gosh it's hard to find people who use it. I think Blogger is so simple to use, but no one I knew, knows anything about it.(Thanks so much for that too)

The book has obviously been written with not only marketing your book in mind, but links the publishing platform with the outside world of people who will get your book from "somewhere" online.

Like a stepladder offered a novice bareback horseman, this book readily gave me a leg up, providing useful help at an appropriate (entry) level. Thank you, Mark Coker. (May I call you "Mark"?)

The prospect of editing one's marked-up (npi) html file, returned by Amazon/Kindle, is truly daunting. How does one use those "tags" so fliply mentioned? Equally scary is learning Microsoft Script Editor (Word>Tools>Macros). Don't want to go there.

So thanks again, Mark. How sweet it is to submit one's book in familiar .doc format--and let Meatgrinder do all the work!

I arrived here from a blog post over at Editor Unleashed. Timely indeed, since I am just about finished authoring an ebook, and I've had no clue about how to market the work.

Well, I spent the time reviewing the entire site and decided to sign up. After signing up the first thing I did was read this guide, and I'm so glad I did. The guide is spot-on in terms of the marketing advice. I'm a blogger and the tools that Mark mentions here pertain to a blog site as well, and I know they work.

The writing style is real and conversational. The tips are great.

This HAS to be your first read at Smashwords.

Like all of Mark's works here at smashwords, if you are an independent author then you would be a fool not to read it. I consider myself one of the more successful independent guerilla marketing authors out there, so I am always skeptical that anyone is going to suggest something that I haven't tried or am not presently doing. And yet, I found a few very useful items for marketing myself and my book within the epages of this book.

I highly recommend this for all new writers who are looking to become more well known(who isn't?!).
