He was staring at me hungrily. As if the infected new anything except hunger. What did I expect? Just because this particular specimen was gorgeous didn't take away from the danger he represented. I could lose everything I was to him.
My heart thumped noisily in my chest. There was no back exit that I had seen, and the space between the counter and the wall was narrow. I could try to climb up on it, but that would slow me down. His eyes were fixed on mine as my thoughts raced and I tried to decide which way to go, what to do. I was transfixed, like a bird staring into the unblinking gaze of a snake. Neither of us moved for what felt like an eternity.
I finally tore myself free from that stare, stifling a little cry of anxiety in my own throat. Noise would just bring more of them down on me, something I truly didn't need. I managed to dart around him, trying to dart through the clutter in the middle of the store.
I nearly ran into the next one, my sneakers skidding on the old tile as I brought myself to a halt. Dark hair, dark eyes, fetching stubble on the skin. He had obviously had bronze skin before. With the paleness of infection, he still had a buttery glow to him, a handsome little Greek god. I made a hissing noise between my teeth as I realized he wasn't alone. A third shadow followed him, a thing with wavy blonde hair and almost colorless grey eyes. I ripped off my backpack and threw it at the pair, hoping to distract them with the noise. I then tried to backpedal and didn't get very far, as the one from the counter had followed me.
Strong arms wrapped around my sides, pulling me back against his chest. Lips were abruptly against my neck, then tongue, as he tasted my skin. I remembered the soft shape of that mouth, and the feel of it sent a heated tingle down my spine. Shit, no. I didn't need to be feeling something like that. The second creature had approached, and I tried to kick at him, but to no avail. They were quicker than I thought they would be. His warm hands were on my sides, then, and he was bending his neck to kiss me hungrily even as the first still held me in place. There was urgency in that mouth. Hunger.
