I am a native Virginian, having been born in Richmond. In my late teens we moved to Virginia Beach where I graduated from Frank W Cox High School. Then I traveled to Harrisonburg to attend and then graduate from James Madison University. After that I was exiled for a few years in Northern Virginia before moving back to the beach where I live with my wife Marcia. My two daughters Heather and Holly live in the area but are on their own and making me proud. I like to work in my gardens when I’m not writing.
For as long as I remember I’ve been a storyteller. My earliest recollection is about a toy I received for Christmas when I was 7. It was a wind-up gyroscopic flying saucer I found utterly fascinating. While playing with it an idea came to me. I quickly wrote a play about alien invaders and how I saved everyone. Then I went door-to-door selling nickel tickets for my play, which I converted to puppets since the flying saucer was the size of a football. I made over two dollars, presented the play outdoors for one show only. Back in the early 1960s that was a lot of money; equivalent to forty candy bars.
Shortly after the terrorist attack on New York and the Pentagon, I watched all developments carefully as did nearly everyone else I’m sure. One night I saw a news report about the plight of women in Afghanistan. What particularly bothered me was a scene in which a woman was marched into the soccer stadium in Kabul amidst a crowd of cheering men, forced to her knees, and then shot in the back of her head. Her crime was refusing to wear the traditional burka.
That was when the idea for SWITCHER came to me. It was more in the form of questions. “What if a woman is thrust into an impossible situation involving several men much larger who had dire plans for her? What if her only defenses were guile and strong will?”
The answers came as quickly as the questions. It took time to transfer them from my mental notepad to actual paper. SWITCHER was born, written to show the women of the world who are treated as property they can overcome anything. That is the motivation behind the story. I hope you enjoy it.
