Alfredo Russo is haunted by the mystery of his birth. He doesn't know who he really is,

All he has to go on is a gold ring with strange, indecipherable symbols and numbers engraved on it, which was on a cord around his neck when he was found abandoned as a
Maybe now he will never know his true identity as he decides to leave the country of his
birth and set sail for England with his wife Benedetta and their children in search of a new
life. Things are good until, like every family in the land and throughout Europe, they
are dragged into the horror and carnage of the first world war.
With war imminent, the spotlight falls on their son Gianni, who immediately volunteers
for the 'great adventure'; and on the tragedies of young friends and lovers who are lost in
the conflict; of close relationships formed and tragically torn asunder; and of brief liaisons,
the consequences of which are destined to echo down the century. As he is about to leave
for France, Alfredo gives Gianni the ring to wear as a bond between them.
As the war comes to an end, Gianni sets off to try and solve the mystery surrounding his
father's birth. A journey that takes him back to his own birthplace, Naples. But violence
erupts when he becomes involved with the Camorra (the Neapolitan mafia) and the Sicilian mafia.
Gianni finds himself tangling with ruthless people who will have no compunction
in killing to get possession of the ring... which he always wears on the third finger of
his right hand
