The Amazing Meditation Revolution: West Meets East
The focus of THE AMAZING MEDITATION REVOLUTION: WEST MEETS EAST is the revolutionary character of the Meditation Movement in twentieth century America. To put it in perspective, the historical roots of that movement in Eastern meditation traditions are surveyed, as is the resulting scientific interest in meditation practice. The book concludes with a presentation of a guided meditation session. More
The central focus of THE AMAZING MEDITATION REVOLUTION is the amazing cultural movement of twentieth century America in which a procession of primarily Eastern meditation masters revolutionized the meaning and importance of the practice of meditation within the lifestyle of Western society. The character and contribution of many of those exotic meditation masters is examined. They range across a broad spectrum, from the highly conservative, such as Krishnamurti, to the bizarre and controversial, such as Rajneesh. The book is based on decades of study, practice, and teaching, as well as my own extensive personal experiences with many of the traditions and teachers.
Although the focus is squarely on the revolutionary twentieth century, full understanding of that subject requires historical perspective. The book, therefore, first takes up the subject of the historical development of Eastern traditions of meditation, and how they came to influence and largely supersede the Western tradition of meditation. The essential difference between the two is clarified.
The importance of the revolutionary nature of the twentieth century movement, also requires an understanding of what followed—that is, what significant changes resulted from the meditation movement. To this end the book delves into the subject of current scientific research regarding the nature of meditation. The practice of meditation gained general respectability by the latter part of the twentieth century, and has been a part of brain research for decades. researchers have learned a great deal, and continue to study the genuine physical nature of meditation, and what the consequences of such practice might be.
All of the above is, of course, rather theoretical. The real value of meditation, though, is not only to have knowledge about it, but to know the experience of it. Consequently, the final part of the book consists of an examination of an actual meditation session, including a guided tour of a basic session. This is also available as an audio presentation by way of a link to the companion website for the book.
As a final point it should be noted that THE AMAZING MEDITATION REVOLUTION includes a large number of relevant images, and a "Questions and Answers" section dealing with common concerns regarding the practice of meditation.
