Most believers don’t actually believe. Sure, they live their lives in an environment that talks about belief, but they don’t personally and instinctively live in that place. That’s not to say they aren’t saved, it’s just that no-one seems to have taught us how to connect the events of the cross of Christ 2000 years ago, with the reality of our daily lives in the here-and-now.
It’s crazy but true, today’s Christianity is say; 80% based on the culture and activities of the church, and at best 20% based on the revelation of “Christ and Him crucified”.
This book is about reversing that statistic, it’s about ‘renewing the mind’ such that the work of the cross dominates our thinking, it’s about a believer’s journey into a life of belief and rest in Christ that I didn’t previously think possible ~ my journey.
Most devotionals are a guide to assist us with our daily quiet time. They generally start with a scripture, followed by some comments and thoughts, and conclude with a prayer. In short, the writer does the thinking for us ~ we become a passenger on their journey; we connect to God through them.
But what if there is a better way? What if the 80/20 rule can be turned on its head by starting over? What if we could tear down and re-build from the foundation up, starting with the foundation of Christ himself?
This book is not a traditional devotional, it’s a journey of renewing the mind in 12 months. This book asks 365 questions (1 a day), aimed at dismantling the wrong thinking that comes with the culture, and replacing it with one magnificent revelation, “Christ in me”. This book is about discovering that we are passengers of Christ.
Renewing the Mind, is not as easy as it sounds – it’s not just about thinking about God more often, it’s not just about thinking higher thoughts – it’s a complete gutting of the structure that we have built up around Christ, and starting from the ground up, layer on layer, truth on truth, Christ and Him crucified.
In the end all 365 questions have the same answer; “Christ and Him crucified”. The questions are merely a means of shifting our thinking away from traditional thought patterns, to begin thinking with the mind of Christ – He is everything, every answer, and best of all “He is in me”.
This book began as a blog, nothing unusual there – but along the way I discovered something from the blogging community; “the majority of Christians have a relatively tenuous grasp of their faith, they are often quite insecure in their walk with Christ, they are more at home in the context of the culture of Christianity than they are in Christ Himself” – I could relate to that, I’d been there.
Yet they long for reality, they long for a faith that carries them easily through life, they believe God is there – they just don’t know how to find Him. In short, they long to know Christ, and not just know about Him.
Against my wildest expectations I have found the object of my faith, He was there all the time – not hiding Himself in the culture we call Christianity, but daring me to believe that ‘all He says about Himself is true’, daring me to step over the line and abandon my entire existence into His goodness, daring me to be a believer who believes.
