Written as a third person work of fiction, Death Panel is the author's memoir of the last four months he had with his wife, Mary, before she succumbed to cancer. The sub plot to the novel is how their HMO, Kaiser Permanente, inexplicably delayed the beginning of chemotherapy. This ensured that she would pass quickly, saving the HMO millions of dollars in treatment expenses.
