Collections don't typically earn 5 star ratings because there is ALWAYS a story or two that is less-than-excellent. The same is true with "A Bestiary of Unnatural Women", but the collection is so good, the remaining stories so engaging, that even a poor story could not detract.

Please note: read the Forward, as she lays out clearly how the collection is structured. It starts out with a fairly tame tale and proceeds into some very dark territory.

Truly a treat!

Ashley's stories were part of the inspiration to start writing my own. I love the way he makes me think about his characters and makes them explore the boundaries of what they're comfortable with. This collection is quite superb.

I am not sure what I expected of this collection of short stories. I knew there were far more stories in the same number of words as the other collections. I should have expected them to be not quite on par of the other stories I have read.

All of the stories are quite good in premise, and I was not let down by the stories. But some seemed a bit too short, I feel like there is more depth to the stories but they were a bit rushed to get to an end. Some were fine in their short prose, but some really begged for more story time.

Zacharias is still a favorite author and I eagerly look forward to more reading but this collection is just a bit short of perfect in my opinion.

Ashley, I have spent about an hour trying to conclude the gender of you first name before writing this review—checking your Bio first. Why? Because I don’t want to commit a faux pas (again—long story) when I speculate on something I’ve read or heard and definitely have concluded in the last few years reading erotic material on the Internet: that women write much better prose in the genre than men. Not that both sexes can’t and don’t produce total crap. They do. But this is supposed to be about your latest book, ‘A Bestiary of Unnatural Women.’ Though I’ve only read three of the stories to date—I like to savor something this good, like fine Christmas chocolates—I look forward to the other half dozen. Each of the three golden nuggets just blew me away. Having read ‘A Lady Pays Her Penalties,’ last summer, which I loved as well, and have downloaded ‘Wives in Service,’ in the fall, which I look forward to reading, I am convinced that women are the superior writers at this genre. None of your stories cross over into more than a titillating hint of porn. Keep up the good work and rest assured, when you decide to charge for it, I will gladly pay.
