There's no joy in coming of age for Lexi. As a illegitimate third-born daughter, she knew the day only held exile from her clan-hold. Outside the walls of her home, there is only the unforgiving desert under the stationary sun of her world. Exile is a thin euphemism for death.

I enjoyed this, what I call a beginning, since I really want to read the rest. What happens next is my big question? I do hope though that the characters begin remaining longer as they seem to have a tendency to disappear quickly especially Old Tom.

A nicely plotted story, but a little cavalier in throwing away characters. Leni is a bit disingenuous for a bastard daughter who has known all her life that she's going to die. Also, the aid she receives is all a bit deus ex machina.

I liked it and would like to read more. It reminded me of one of the dune books when a young boy is cast out of the siech and is the first to learn to ride the sand worms. I think it would make for a good novel.
