Ava Stotts-Fisher has just finished her master’s degree at age 24. Unfortunately, her long term relationship is also finished. After the break up, Ave gives up her apartment and accepts a position as counselor for a travel study program to fulfill her desire to visit her ancestors’ homeland and expand her own horizons. With the future beyond the program uncertain, the trip through Europe becomes a metaphor for the journey from the well-controlled path of youth to the unchartered realms of the adult world. The students Ava is responsible for – some younger than she, some older – have various reasons for signing up for the trip and encounter their own challenges along the way.
The program begins in London where the group studies Renaissance art by day and enjoys pub festivities at night. They then begin their trek across the Channel to Belgium and beyond, accompanied by a professor and an intern from the University of London. Interactions with people from other cultures are at times amusing and sometimes enlightening during their stays in Amsterdam, Munich, Vienna, Rome, Venice, and finally Paris. Friendships and romances form, and conflicts arise. By the conclusion, Ava and the students have discovered much about the world and their places in it, and Ava has a major decision to make that will impact the future course of her life.
