With a vengeance

When this book came out in 2011 it had been a while since Marcus novel ‘Brother in arms’ had been published. I had heard from Dennis Martin, my instructor and mutual friend that he had seen the manuscript and without giving any details Den managed to excite us. We all waited impatiently for its publication but the subject was a sensitive matter with many publishers. Then Marcus switched to eBook format and got it finally published.

A year after surviving a deadly terrorist attack on a plane Federal Air Marshal Hunter James gets involved in a series of events which are linked by a ghost from the past.

At the moment I picked this book up I was trying to get a deeper understanding of the classics by Musashi and Sun Tzu. Coincidently the protagonist was deeply into these books as well as into 36 Stratagems which made it all the more interesting for me personally.

Marcus Wynne is known for his research and teaching in neural based training for combatives. This led him to train formula one drivers, work with NASA and train security forces all over the world. Many people have asked for a manual; though Marcus philosophy is about doing it rather than read about it. Stories being great carriers for knowledge and lessons the book seems to be a training manual in disguise.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes the genre about special operators, is interested in strategy, likes to read about gun and knife fights, is interested in neural based training or just enjoys a great story!

Excellent read, written by someone that's been there! Marcus Wynne adds the realism that is lacking in so many of today's novels.

Marcus Wynne once again has demonstrated his mastery of the action genre. More 'Faction' than fiction his books draw on his extensive real world experience as a high-risk operator in a variety of fields. With a Vengeance has a rich cast of characters who drive the plot at a tremendous pace, I was truly unable to put this down and read it in one sitting. Excellent read!

We have another Clancy in the making. Its nice that the author does his research and fashions a tale that is truely believable.

Loved this book. I have read the others with exception of Johnny Wylde. This is my favorite. I have been fortunate enough to meet and attend a presentation put on by Mr Wynne in the past. He is the real deal. I think B.G. posted an accurate review of the book. If you have been in this community, you will recognize a few characters. I will be keeping this one and referring back to it with additional "training".

I’ve been putting off this review for a while now. I even got a few reminders from Smashwords about it. I couldn’t help it…it took a while for this book to sink in. I did my best to read it as quickly as possible. It was, quite simply, that good. My OCD kicked in a few times as there were little things that caught my attention. I could be off, but there were some discrepancies or elements of “polish” missing from the book. For example, some proofreading errors may have slipped through, as at least one character seemed to have two different spellings for his first name in at least three different sections of the book. Anything major? Nope. Was this a first class read? Absolutely.

On to the meat and ‘taters of this review. Marcus Wynne knows his stuff. Everyone says so, and for those in the know…it shows again and again. Much like another literary masterpiece of warfare and deception mentioned in this book, “With A Vengeance” has an obvious surface worth upon reading it, however, for anyone really willing to take the time to think about it, there is much more to be had from this book. There is some real depth to the material and thought Wynne used to craft it. Simply by way of the subject matter it covers, and the ideas used to convey it, I believe it had to. I swear there is a “behind the scenes” treatise on fourth generation warfare hiding in there somewhere.

But don’t worry about simply being entertained, if all that thinking isn’t exactly your cup of tea. All the elements of a great operational fiction are present too. The first hand account of tools, tactics and tradecraft…the important support staff/background players, the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) interplay and interconnectivity of the strategic, political, tactical, military and social world we currently occupy…all there. Most importantly, the genuine mindset of many real world operators utilized as a set piece for the crux of the story…it has that too. Some real world folks and operational niche “celebrities” even make appearances in this book adding support to the factual elements with regards to the training, weapons and techniques discussed throughout. Personally, I thought that this also added an element of fun to the story. I also really appreciated that he managed to wrangle some key ideas of the Jedi Project, and some great bits of neurolinguistic programming into the mix, just for good measure.

Ultimately, I felt that this rivaled some of Wynne’s other works, rising to the level of “No Other Option” (a personal yardstick I use for judging other novels in my library). I think that not only did he weave a great story, but he may have also given us a hint of the type of threats we may face in a very real future. Good news is I know that there are people like Hunter James out there to face them for us! Finally, to Mr. Wynne…thanks for the fantastic book!!

I waited for years to read something new from Mr. Wynne and this story didn't fail to live up to my expectations. If you're a knife lover and a "knifer", then you will love this book, especially with all the little knife maker and knifers references Wynne throws in. The story moves fast, the characters are vintage Wynne, and the action satisfies. Only problem I had was that on some pages there wasn't an arrow for me to "turn" the page and I had to go back and then forward two spaces again to continue, which always seemed to happen during the really intense action scenes.
Buy this book! It's definitely worth it...

A fantastic book. I read it on a transatlantic flight and couldn't put it down.
Marcus has been there and worn out the t-shirt.
I love the way he weaves reality into fiction.
Buy this and all of Marcus' back catalogue. You won't be disapointed.

If you are a fan of action literature this will definately float your boat.

Air Marshals, Terrorism, Knife Fighting, Combatives!! What more could you possibly want in a book!!?? Written by a man who genuinely knows his stuff. The fight scenes are the most realistic I have ever read in a novel, and there is a wealth of tactical information inter-woven into the narrative. Not only is it a damned good read, you'll learn something to!!

I made the mistake of sitting down to read
just the first few pages while on a lunch break, and almost missed the rest of a work day! It obvious that Marcus has been there and done that...Marcus Wynne is the finest author of this genre to date. I've been a die hard fan since reading his first three novels and have anxiously awaited "With A Vengeance." The wait was well worth it. Marcus puts you into his novels like no other can. The fight scenes in this book are the most realistic and graphic that I have read to date. The equipment and the artisans who make it that are represented in the book are the real deal. They are some of the most sought after in the real world by those in the know. Marcus Wynne is a been there, done that warrior from the old school that simply "gets it." I cannot recommend this book highly enough! Good to have you back Marcus!

Some of the very finest of "Operational Fiction" available on the market. No one writes fiction that you can learn from like Wynne. If you demand realistic action, and authentic background and gear, look no further. I'm so happy Marcus Wynne is back to writing, hopefully he can only get better with time. Long overdue, glad your back at it Marcus.
