Dorks of Shagpile
A microscopic world exists in the remnants of carpets found in a derelict greenhouse. Dorks of Shagpile is a story about the adventures of Danny Dork and the other children and people who live in the neighborhood. The rivalry between the townships of Shagpile and Green Velvet is fierce. Danny and his family have moved from Green Velvet to Shagpile but who will he play for in the big soccer game?. More
To adults, the world of Shagpile doesn’t exist. It’s just an old, broken-down greenhouse at the end of an overgrown garden. Inside the greenhouse, all adults can see in the corner of the greenhouse is an old piece of shag pile carpet, a piece of green velvet and welcome mats, which have been discarded and lie under a broken dripping tap. A small pool of water has formed between the discarded items. There is some sand spilled alongside the water and the edge of the welcome mat.
Much of the book centers on the exploits and adventures of the title characters, Danny Dork and his family and his various friends in the fictional microscopic city of Shagpile.
The Dork family are moving from Green Velvet to neighboring Shagpile, a village that gets its name from the landscape of the area with tall waspish trees that sway in the wind, and in places, the densely wooded areas resemble a shag pile carpet. Shagpile butts up on one side to the perfectly manicured eco-village development of Green Velvet and a wasteland known as The Matlands on the other. Green Velvet is a pristine, gated-community with typical American soccer Mom families and annoying Dads who all call their sons ‘Buddy’ and behave obnoxiously at their kids’ sports games.
The terrain of The Matlands can only be crossed by foot or by ATV’s. The far edge of the wasteland has a sandy beach and the area has been developed into a boat-access only family resort, where you will find the popular Slippers Club.
Every year Shagpile play Green Velvet in a local soccer match but they have never managed to win. Danny is one of Green Velvets star players but with the family moving to Shagpile he and his sister Betsy have to decide who to play for in the big match. Danny finds his new friends and neighbors in Shagpile have some very strange and interesting powers and peculiarities that bring some hilarious results.
