The Ghost Family is a quiet, contemplative portrait of a California family. Laurel and Mion are cousins who grew up close as sisters. But there is an unknown third branch of the family. Their half cousin Jane was raised in communes with her hippie mom. When she stumbles across letters that trace back to her married grandfather’s affair, a generations old secret begins to unravel.

This was a really engrossing stoy - by the end, I couldn't put it down. A classic family saga of the baby boom generation and their parents (and children), set in California with good local color about San Francisco in particular. The characters are very compelling - I wanted to know even more about them!

This book was more serious than the cat counselor blog, but populated with interesting and memorable characters. I enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes literary fiction.
