I’ve always been curious about what stories lay behind closed doors.
Everyone has a story, but not everyone will let you in to hear it.
When a career change came along late in my life, a door opened up,
so to speak, giving me the opportunity to peer into some of those
mysterious places. I became a sales representative for a major moving
company. My job was to provide an estimate for people’s impending
moves. Everything they owned was laid before my eyes. I had the
privilege to read their life story by simply going through their
belongings. I was virtually given permission to invade their privacy.
I had to gain trust with my potential customers, giving them
confidence that my company would provide a reliable, professional
service for them to relocate their goods. My first job was to instill
trust in me, and this is where the stories began to develop. With
each encounter I found myself involved with these strangers helping
them cope with the stress of moving; all behind closed doors.
They all helped me to learn more about how different we all are
and yet how our needs are very much the same.
