Zoey and Ben both come from bad backgrounds-Zoey has an alcoholic mother who hates her and Ben's dad beats him up. They are the targets of bullies but this latest beating wakes up a vampire gene and triggers a dramatic change in Zoey, turning her into a bloodthirsty monster.
I liked Zoey and Ben and their friendship is the one good thing in their lives, though Ben is looking for more from her. Zoey doesn't understand why her mother hates her so much until she finds out what really happened to her father. Turning into a vampire is about to bring great changes to her life and Zoey fears that she may no longer have Ben there with her. I liked the story and I was quite happy with what Zoey did when she turned into a vampire! I guess that says a lot about my personality! The storytelling was good and I liked the way Ben and Zoey were written even if their lives were pretty grim. The author knows how to tell the story and have you care about the characters.
I would be interested in knowing about what happens to Zoey and Ben but there is a problem. I don't like historical vampire books and the flashbacks and the scenes with the Order make it look as if the story about them is set back during the witch trial era in another dimension or in a community who choose to live like that in modern times. This setting does not really interest me even with vampires. Having tried to find out more about the upcoming books, from the blurb they sound like a love triangle with fangs from book two on so I won't be reading on as I hate love triangles.
