Dr. Edwin Muinga is the former Chairman of Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) 2009-2012; one of the largest research institutions in the country. He is also former Founder Chairman of Kenya Association of Private Hospitals (KAPH), and Founder Chairman of the then Makupa hospital, Mombasa.
Dr Muinga holds MBCHB (1980) and Master in Medicine (1987) (Psychiatry) degrees, from the University of Nairobi, a member of the American Association of Psychiatric Medicine, Previously, he was Provincial Psychiatrist, Coast General Hospital. Mathare Hospital Residency in psychiatry; medical officer at Naivasha District Hospital, Kisii District Hospital and medical officer, Intern at The Kakamega General Hospital (1980)
He holds visiting rights to various Private Hospitals for psychiatry in Mombasa where he practices psychiatry
He has held other responsibilities like; Board Member of National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) 2010-2012; member Kenya Medical Association (KMA); member Mombasa Chamber of Commerce; founder Chairman; Kaloleni Community Development Fund (K.C.D.F.) 1998 (the fore runner of CDF); Chairman Consortium of Private Health Care Providers. Former Chairman Board of Governors, St. Augustine’s Preparatory School, Mombasa. Former board member Tudor Day Secondary; former board member Khamisi Secondary School, former chairman St. Lukes Hospital, Kaloleni; former member National Economic Social Council (NESC); coordinator Maji ya Chumvi – Miritini road HIV/AIDS project; and Chairman Athi river Kambe environmental assessment, Kaloleni.
Dr Muinga features among respected technocrats behind the Kenya Vision 2030 that is armed to take Kenya's economy to the higher level of growth and development. He is the founder of Muinga Chokwe Foundation; well known for promoting culture and social-economic values of Kenyans in the coastal region.
He is a board member of St Augustines Preparatory School , in Mombasa and Bofu Secondary School in Rabai, Kilifi County and a member of District Education board, Rabai and the Ruruma Development committee in Rabai district.
He hails from Mwanjama village, Ruruma Location in Rabai district.
During his thirty three years in Government and Private practice both in psychiatry and general medicine, Dr Muinga has mentored countless number of medical and paramedical personnel who include specialists in various fields of medicine. Dr Muinga has also contributed immensely to health care provision in this country through the Kenya Association of Private Health( KAPH), and the CONSORTIUM of health care providers of whom he was the Founder Chair.
These institutions continue to engage Government in matters of Health care provision in Kenya.
Dr Muinga has also been involved in local politics including the fight fot multiparty democracy in Kenya in the nineties and unsuccessfully running for political office in Rabai constituency in 2013.
Through the KALOLENI community development fund, KCDF, Dr Muinga has spear headed provision of basic learning infrastructure, including building of classrooms and provision of desks, a task that is still far from over in Rural Kenya.
As Chairman of KEMRI, Dr Muinga with the help of the board and the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, was able to quickly turn around an institution that was on the verge of collapse, by instituting stringent and professional measures .
By the time Dr Muinga quit in order to run for political office in 2012, Kemri was firmly on its feet and donor and Government support had doubled resulting in high staff morale and great scientific output.
Kemri is now set to go into production and commercialization of its products and also offer its own university degrees
During his tour of duty, Dr Muinga has traveled widely both in Kenya and overseas ( Germany,Canada, UK, ) and also attended, various training meetings in corporate management, and also scientific conferences.
Dr. Muinga schooled in Kasidi Primary School in Kaloleni, Makupa Primary School in Mombasa, Kwale High School, Kenyatta College (for A-levels) and University of Nairobi.
He is married with four children His hobbies are reading, music, football and community mobilization.
