About Jackie Barbosa

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer when I grew up, but there were plenty of times when I wasn’t sure I ever would be. As it turns out, it just took me about twenty years longer to grow up than I expected!

On the road to publication, I took a few detours, including a stint in academia (I hold an MA in Classics from the University of Chicago and was a recipient of a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities) and many years as a technical writer/instructional designer for a data processing company. I still hold my day job in instructional design, but my true passion is writing steamy romances–both historical and contemporary.

I learned to believe in love at first sight when I met the man of my dreams over two decades ago and to believe in happily ever after when I married him. I live in Southern California with my real-life hero, our three children, and an ever-changing menagerie of pets.

The Reiver by Jackie Barbosa
A Scottish Border Romance
Duncan Maxwell, laird of Lochmorton Castle is surprised to find the lad they captured and threw into the dungeon is not a lad at all. He puts the lass up in a warm bed and plies her with good food in hopes of finding out who she wrote with as a reiver. It seems she would prefer the noose to betraying her loved ones.

Jamie Johstone finds the Maxwell's to be more kind that she grew up thinking. She tried to hold unto her hate for them but Duncan was kind to her and all his people thought highly of him as well. But no matter….she was an enemy and didn’t have the beauty and feminine wiles to persuade him different.

An enjoyable short story to read when you don’t feel like reading a long book. Loosely based on the history of two border families that were feuding. The romance is fictional.
**Sensual situations

3.5 stars, mostly because I liked the story and Ms. Barbosa's writing style. She's a new-to-me author and free books are a great way to try a new author IMO. However, this novella was just too short for me to form any kind of critical comments. If you have an hour or so to spare, and wanna spend the time with something light, short (and free), this is a good book. I'm looking forward to read more of JB books in the future.
