About James Hold

"First you're an unknown, then you write one book and you move up to obscurity." — Martin Meyers

I published my first book in 2004. It became an immediate collector's item. I know this for a fact as I have several hundred copies collecting dust in my attic. Critics everywhere said it belonged right up there between Ernest Hemingway and Robert E Howard—on an alphabetical bookshelf.

My influences include Rocky & Bullwinkle, 1950s sci-fi movies, and silver-age comics.

I live in Texas with my Princess wife, and cats Rocky and Dusty. You can contact me at jamesroyhold@gmail.com.

Despite the slang, and a lot of informal words? This definitely reads like a James Hold book.

I believe what makes a great series, is the ability of the author to convince his readers of reading the next book, and this one clearly hooked me to the next book in the series.

Hilarious parody of Indiana Jones and comic book heroes. J-man (a cat who changed into a person) goes on trip to find lost city of Moe Town. He meets chief's daughter Watta-Setta-Nakas. :-) He rescues the frozen turkey-god Melagris (Mighty Thor) and battles Santa Claus. Back home, J-man plays bodyguard to visiting Filipina Princess. The fickle princess is accurately portrayed. He meets a pulp-era crimefighter Damask (Shadow/Spider) and a superhero outfit from Idaho called Special Services (Fantastic Four). The princess is kidnapped by the Eyes of Texas (ZZ Top) and J-man has to stop them from starting a war. There is a lot of funny stuff between J-man and his boss. The ending is sad and tender.

Less wrestling here but still fun. First story begins with the promoter reading to all the wrestlers in the company sitting in a circle at his feet, listening. An odd concept but it works in this weird setting. It then becomes a lost race adventure. The Turkey God, Melagris, is introduced in a sequence satirizing Marvel Comics when they resurrected Captain America.
Next is a love story where J-man fights a conspiracy to cause a war between Houston and Dallas. This one has some good wrestling action outside the ring. The villains are modeled after ZZ Top.
Lucha Underground fans would love this stuff.

This book is soooo funny. Which makes it unfair that the ending is so sad. Mr. Hold has a handfull of fans who review his work, but he deserves to have many more. Maybe he has a silent cult following who read his work but keep it to themself. If anyone reads this review, you need to spread the word about this author.
