About Martin Krieg

I am Martin Krieg, a business school graduate of Cal State Hayward and former accountant. I have crossed the country twice on a bicycle after first rehabilitating myself from paralysis, clinical death and a seven-week coma as a result of a car wreck.

In 1979, I rode across America on a standard upright bicycle. On my second trip across America in 1986 I rode a recumbent bike and organized media events, public speaking and fund raising for the National Head Injury Foundation. That ride reached 40 million people amongst my newspaper, public speaking and TV and radio appearances. Upon its completion, to spread the word for the interconnected network of safely bikeable roads and paths I envision called the National Bicycle Greenway (NBG - it became a nonprofit in 1993), from 1987 to 1994, I published 60,000 Cycle America Regional Directories in four different parts of California.

In 1994, WRS Publishing published the book I had written and rewritten for 14 years. Called "Awake Again, all the way back from head injury", it shows how I turned my long rehabilitation and subsequent bike rides, into the same game I am playing now to make the NBG real. Once this next chapter of my life's dream, the NBG, can stand on its own, I will then return to my writing and public speaking, Until then:

For the next five years, I alternated between traveling the country to promote my book and learning the excitement of the all new World Wide Web as I built the first web sites for well over a hundred small and large bike companies. In 1997, I began a campaign to send hundreds of cyclists to Washington, DC. It started in Santa Cruz, CA with two Swing for NBG events and a Lighthouse Party send off. All of which ended with a widely known bike celebration called Cycle America 2000. We brought that excitement back to the West Coast with two large cross-country relay rides both of which ended in the Surf City with huge Festivals. During this time, I also personally inspired, coached and consulted on over a dozen other successful transcontinental bikes rides.

Since 2003, from Palo Alto, CA, we still produce the annual National Mayors' Ride and the Mountain Movers Podcast series. In addition, I have also written “How to Bike America”, am working on a business plan for the NBG and poured hours of research and writing into what amounts to the sequel to "Awake Again' called “How America can Bike and Grow Rich, The National Bicycle Greenway in Action” (HBGR).

I took the 2007 Mayors' Ride season off to devise a fully interactive Google mapping system that runs like a game while building community to let users calculate, request, plan, utilize, store, display and vote on bike routes. I did this all toward the end of showing how, in our increasingly crowded world, the internet can now make the bicycle the superior way to move one's self about.

In the summer of 2009, in an attempt to call attention to the NBG, in what became a test run because of all the horrific weather (the deserts were water logged), I rode the Eagle HiWheel, the only one like it in active use in the world, from SF to Salt Lake City. In 2010, my Mayors' Ride/Author Tour on the amazing Eagle was put on hold by a car that ruined my bike when it turned left in front of us.

At which point I moved to Ireland, married my wife Virginia, had Baby Cayo, finished HBGR and have been studying Europe's top Greenway system, the Great Western Greensay., made possible here by a joint partnership between the National Tourist Bureau and 14 other public and private stakeholders as led by the Irish National Road Authority.

Going forward, Google changed the plans I had for getting my map plan underwritten when they introduced bike mapping directions. As such, in merging their work with the work of our NBG Scouts, we now have our coast-to-coast map on the main page at BikeRoute.com

Here now in 2014, the Google mapping platform matured enough for us to be able to apply the decade of Mayors' Ride research our NBG Scouts have supplied to create the coast-to-coast route that will, in time, give way to the perfect world National Bicycle Greenway we have long foreseen. Toward that end, we have joined forces with Ray Irvin, Mr. Greenway himself at http://bikeroute.com/NationalBicycleGreenwayNews/2011/08/15/ray-irvin-mr-greenway-speaks-with-nbg, to make it real!! Soon, the avalanche of excitement we create will be too hard to ignore!!

This as year in year out our route gets ridden, it will become the dedicated bicycle greenway we have long envisioned!!

Martin mounting only active Eagle HiWheel in world
This video shows Martin Krieg mounting the 1891 Eagle HiWheel bicycle he plans to ride across the USA. This version of the Penny Farthing bicycle came out just as the HiWheel craze was giving way to the traditional diamond frame bicycle that we know today. It is reverse facing to make it safer and perform better. Most of the small number of these machine that remain today are in museums.

The first time I read it, when it came out in 1994 as a hard back, this book brought tears to my eyes. It made all the challenges I had before me seem small by comparison. I didn't see this in any of the book's promotion materials, but I found this amazing link showing some of the many lives this book has affected:

I was so inspired by it, that when I saw that it was now an E-Book, I had to have it for my iPad so I could pull it out and read it whenever I was feeling in need of a lift.

Instead of promoting his inspiring story, it looks like from the author's web site, he has been using this book as a calling card to make his bold vision of a coast to coast bike way real. In the blogs he and his group also run, he talks about how the 15-person Busycle, which first gained fame in Boston, came to the San Francisco area to help Martin with the dream he details in his book. This is also true for the 1891 Eagle HiWheel bike he also rides now to promote his vision and plans to soon ride from one coast to the other.

This book was first published by WRS Publishing as a hard back in 1994. Instead of promoting it, I have used it to open doors for the vision I have long held for a National Bicycle Greenway (NBG). It has greatly expanded possibility consciousness for such a dream as well as created a lot of opportunity for it, including the 15-person Busycle and the 1891 Eagle HiWheel that I promote the NBG with.
