At the time it didn’t seem like a good thing—moving seven times in the first seventeen years of my life. The moves always seemed to come at awkward times of development for me—first grade, sixth grade, ninth grade; but the last was the most exasperating because it was just before my senior year in high school. It was extremely unsettling, to move into a new state, new community, and to know no one in my new high school. Instead of being bitter, I resolved to rise up to the new opportunities presented to me. Someone once said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond.” These changes prepared me for a traveling lifestyle I had no clue about as a youngster, an itinerant lifestyle of ministry. All total, I’ve lived in 24 different homes in 8 states and 2 provinces of Canada! I’ve taught in five different states and discovered teachers and kids are all pretty much the same wherever I go!
Stepping through the recipes of life is a short narrative of a literal dream fulfilled; I knew I was going to marry a preacher man. With a dash of humor this is a story of what has moved me throughout the North American continent in various ministry roles. It has undoubtedly been a challenging faith walk, but every step a blessing—some in disguise, but ordained by an ever present and loving God. Not only are these anecdotes about what moved me physically from east to west, from north to south, but they have also stirred me to faith, love, joy, tears, and laughter.
I’m always cooking up something in the kitchen; experimenting with a certain recipe or trying a unique ingredient is an exciting experience for me. I like to take tried and true recipes and make them even better and healthier. Even though everything doesn’t need fixing, it somehow makes me feel better to know I put my special touches on it! Change and creativity have always been second nature to me. Adding a little spice to life is always a good thing, right?
Along our journey, we could not avoid stepping into the cavernous potholes of life. We have face betrayal, rejection, hurt, criticism, and disappointment as we move through this earthly existence! Regrettably, power and greed are not impervious to church leadership. Phony, sanctimonious leaders and backslapping parishioners have been around for thousands of years! Dealing with the sticky situations that occur has required guidance and discernment from our every present Navigator!
Some of the tales told involve snakes, planes and automobiles. Glimpses of ministry experiences are identified as we enter clean up efforts both environmentally and spiritually. The mercy and majesty of our God during our encounters has been awe-inspiring.
Traveling to various corners of the vast globe with my husband, Tom, and our two amazing daughters has produced incredible memories. Numerous long-distance friendships have been formed along these paths. Even finding favor with a dog breeder, I discovered the best dog known to humankind, Sammy the rompin’ Australian Labradoodle.
God has a perfect plan for our lives. Some steps will be indeed turbulent and daunting. Such are the escapades of life. I may resist, I may ignore, or I may willingly submit and be pleasantly surprised at the incredible adventures He has in store for me. I don’t want to miss out on any of these plans and invariably ready to step in! Marvelous opportunities beyond my wildest dreams are to be explored.
