First off, it's hard to assess stars for a book like this. For the general travel/adventure reader, it's probably a 3-star, but if you are specifically interested in cruising your sailboat around the world, it should get 4 stars.
I fall into the latter category. Mrs. Van Rooyen writes well in a straightforward way with little embellishment. This, her first volume, reads a bit like a journal and, given that, could benefit from painting characters more vividly and describing some activities with more detail and color. Even some dialog would help.
But, when relating the sailing experience, the challenges, weather conditions, routes and ports-of-call, it is good. There are photos and maps, diagrams of the sail plan, layout of the boat and a glossary--all are well wrought.
Because the prose is spare, the reading goes fast. I finished in two sittings and found, at the end, a need to read another in her series of seven "Sailing with Senta" books.
