Any Devil's Angels
"Any Devil's Angels" tells of the continuing perils of the minister of a small church in San Francisco who is trying to up-date his religion for erasing gender prejudices. First his Sunday newspaper blows up in his face; a week later his pulpit has a bomb that throws him into the choir; whereupon, his wife’s car is blown into pieces. Local authorities, the FBI and the ATF investigate. More
A movie-star handsome middle-aged pastor, Doctor S. Aaron Price, of a small church in South San Francisco, who gives talks on Bay Area TV, is unusually liberal, based on a comparison with his connection to the fundamentalist mother church. He is trying to update his congregation’s philosophies to expose bigotry after discovering some grand universal truths: including a proposition that, “God is literally the universal software we individuals all have access to for running our PC-like brains, while using our inherent, loving, spiritual minds.”
Brother Aaron is periodically bombed. First he’s given a firecracker bomb in his Sunday newspaper. The explosion is frightening, but he suffers only superficially. Investigators accuse Price of arranging his own firecracker bombing as a publicity stunt.
A supposed representative of the mother church shows up to warn Aaron about his “heresy.” But Aaron and his beautiful wife persevere for a while. ATF, FBI and locals investigate.
Another bomb blows him from his pulpit into the choir, while he’s being telecast. He and others are hurt. Aaron considers resigning his position, but only for a moment. His wife and children challenge him to prevail. Meanwhile ATF, FBI and locals continue with investigations.
Next, Doctor Price’s wife’s car is set to explode, but a neighbor sees the bomb-setter and law officials have it detonated out of harm—mostly out of harm, on a local school’s athletic field. Investigations go on in earnest. Price, his church and the mother church are suspected.
To incredibility, a bomber—of a group represented by this individual—himself confesses participation: based on indirect, and direct, influence from Price’s philosophies; and, he sort-of explains his repentant actions. Prior to this anti-climactic confession, the individual likely responsible for contracting the bombers is identified, allegedly, but is literally scared to death by the professed contracted party (the one confessing).
There is no final resolution from a legal perspective because the most allegedly guilty suspect is dead. Exactly who promoted the contracts for bombings cannot be known for certain but there are at least three incidents that allow readers to determine guilt according to their own determinations.
The manuscript’s text contains new age sermons, philosophic speculation, some romance, a bit of humor, some mystery, much action and great potential for substantial controversy. The theme of the writing is a lot larger than a great set of adventures; it contains its philosophy, psychology and pragmatics with excitement and superb entertainment. Much of the action of the story contains subterranean symbolic plot data and metaphoric content, of course, to expose the traditional bigotry brought through a religious sect.
