An average everyday child of the 60's should have an autobiography right? This is about what I knew when I was growing up and did not have to wish I knew. This is about what I want my kids to know and why not everybody else in the process. More
This is my story about what I wanted to be when I grew up starting in the 60’s, living with my parents in my grandparents’ house, with family all around. I always wondered what it was like for my parents and grandparents growing up but since I did not come from a family of writers all I have are memories.
What I do today has some definite beginnings from what I did back then. Both of my grandfathers were blue collar laborers but I know nothing about how they grew up. Common everyday people did not write autobiographies and I never wrote anything but silly teenage poetry when I was 16.
In 2005 I digitized the first ten years of my life from a collection of 1500 old family 35mm slides. It was like travelling back in time and memories came flooding back while doing it. There was one picture of me when I was 2 years old wearing a cowboy hat and I remembered the boots I had that went with them. They go along with one of the earliest memories I have, wanting to grow up and be a cowboy.
This story follows that thread of what I wanted to be when I grew up. The cowboy idea was quickly replaced by other things and this story traces then to the present. This is an autobiography and I am pretty sure the dates and timeframes are relatively accurate. There is a positive focus on events even when things were not going well and this is the way I remember it.
This story is dedicated to my family and mostly my grandfathers and father. It takes place mostly in the outskirts of Northwest Philadelphia in Roxborough, Manayunk and Wissahickon. Even now I live about 5 miles from where I grew up and the memories are even closer.
With this little story my grandkids will not have to wonder what it was like when I grew up. I am inspired by all of my kids who have talents well beyond anything I ever had. Maybe in the near future this will help me to get some of the fiction in my head out into the world.
