Kate Lawrence, an aspiring poet and book editor in New York, falls in love with Sérgio, a Brazilian diplomat who overwhelms her with his intelligence, charm and high culture. Her father and her friends are worried: "I've seen this play before, Catherine," he says, "and so have you." This story is a prequel to the novel Farewell Rio.
