I should be barricaded at home, scared like the rest of them. But no. I'm out walking the streets, sure my mind is about to burn out. The last thing I need is to run into a snot-nosed kid with a stolen alien artifact. Both seem to have something to do with the vines invading the city, but why should I care? Unfortunately for me, the vines care. Includes the complete BONUS story, "In the Cauldron" More

About J.A. Marlow

It's said I was launched into space from birth and I haven't been back to Earth since.

There might be some truth in that.

As a reader I love science fiction with great plots, interesting characters, exotic locales, all accompanied by a sense of wonder with optimistic endings. As a writer, I love the same.

For a short story, the characters are surprisingly developed. A bit confusing, though.

Apart from the Salmon Run Series, I read all of J.A. Marlow's books, and this one holds the same quality as the others. I loved the main character, so cynical and still subtly caring -- very well done. The only drawback is that at one point near the end, the negotiations (readers will know what I'm referring to) feel a little too rushed. I'd happily have read a little more on the planet's politics. It would have made for a smoother ride to the really satisfying end.

I was there, breathing the air, watching the vines, as the first-person point of view character related the wonder of the strange city and alien vines. A very good read.

the way this book is done in first-person makes it truly unique. the story, the characters, even the settings are done with top notch quality. this book grabs you from the very start and does not let go even after the finish. wonderful novellette, grade A workmanship.

This was a fast paced plot that at times leaves you breathless as you race with the characters. It hooked me from the first and I enjoyed every word.

Although I enjoyed it, I did feel a little cheated at the end - I wanted more!! I'd love to see more on this world and how things fare in the future.

Review by: A.J De Vial on April 1, 2011 :
The characters, though few, really seem to come to life in Spires. J A Marlow brings the world to life through a first person point of view, taking us inside the main characters world with ease. If you're a fan of science fiction and like that fantastical element, then dive into this book.
