C. L. Heckman, a small-town writer from Pennsylvania, grew up with a love of words. At the age of eight, she wrote her first song lyrics, and put them to a piano melody she had created. At the age of eleven, she began to write poetry, and entered her poems in many competitions around the U.S.
Drifting from writing, she spent nearly twenty years riding and showing Arabian horses, and has multiple Regional Championship titles to her name. However, unable to leave the dream of writing behind, she continued to write any chance she got in the hopes of one day accomplishing her dream.
When a high school history teacher advised her to be a writer, she ignored him, assuming that it was a far-fetched goal. However, almost a decade later, she finally took his advice and has now self-published her first novel, Charlie's Pond.
Heckman, a stay-at-home mom to her beautiful daughter, is currently working on her next novel, as well as a few short stories. She states that when she is old and gray, she will tell her grandchildren about her biggest accomplishments, knowing now, that her books will be one of them.

Great book about a girl and her family secrets. Love reading how Sam grew as a character from a strong child to an even stronger adult. I love how through everything she went through she remained loyal to her family in hopes they would become normal. This book made me go through all my emotions. Great read!

I have to say, that I love to pick up an easy read novel at the end of a hard day and, especially for a book about abuse and domestic violence, ‘Charlie’s Pond’ was definitely easy to read.
The story Follows Samantha, who has to learn how to grow up and be herself in a world where she has low self-esteem and anxiety caused by her home life. Heckman has a fantastic ability to describe complex characters and have you imagining how each scene looks without a lot of dreary descriptive writing breaking the flow. She was able to instil the fear and pain the character experiences without the graphic detail that can be off putting in books such as this.
The book was formatted so time moved forward quickly, but without the disjointed feel that often comes with leaping in time in other books, and that meant you did not want to put it down. The best part for me, though, was that the ending is not predictable or cliché – and is more indicative of what would happen in this situation.
This is a definite must read that will have your heart racing and your eyes rushing to reach the conclusion. So enjoyable that I am off to read another of this authors books!
