I had been 'playing' around with beads in my spare time for many, many years. A dear friend introduced me to wirework in 1988 after a car accident ended my career as a graphic artist. I fell head over heels in love with wire, and though I play with other jewelry mediums from time to time, I always come back to wire, and I have been creating jewelry with wire over 28 years.
In 2007, I took a leap of faith to start selling my jewelry full time. I already had a huge inventory. I never had any intention of making a living with my jewelry - it was just an expensive hobby - a way to spend my free time, and end up with something pretty to wear. Most of what I made, I gave away to friends and family as gifts.
My biggest regret is not doing it sooner, when my Mother would have been alive to see it. She was my biggest fan, and believed in what I could do, even when I didn't. 2 of my most popular ring designs, Marcella Crystal Ring 1 &2, are named in honor of her, since I'm sure I inherited my obsession with rings from her.
I get asked ALL THE TIME, how I think of things, or where my ideas come from. Sometimes I know, most times I don't. Most of the time, designs just pop into my head, and I have no clue what triggered it. I keep notepads everywhere, and have even had to pull my car out of traffic to jot down design ideas before they evaporate. Though, after cutting off a Sheriff awhile back, I am more careful to look before I zip out of traffic. I was so intent on jotting down my thoughts, I didn’t realize I was holding up a “wait a minute finger” to a cop! O.o Not until he tapped on the window a second time. I will admit the look on his face; after I babbled for 5 minutes to explain myself, was priceless. Thinking of him walking away, muttering and shaking his head, still makes me smile.
