I found Not Magic Enough to be a very delightful read. Like other books I've read from the author, I found myself easily and quickly getting completely into the story, as if I was there. It's an introduction to a fantasy world in the middle earth tradition of humans, elves and dwarves, but it also works well on a level of interpersonal dynamics. The opening set the tone for both of those aspects, almost dream-like. The plot was intriguing and at the same time easy to follow, as was the development of the story from the characters' perspectives. At the end it left me eager for more -- wanting to find out more about the realm and the characters who lived there, their struggles, battles and triumphs.

A delightful novella. This was my first venture into Fantasy. Having sheltered myself from Lord of the Ring mania, you could call me a late developer and this was the perfect introduction to the genre. Delae, is a competent young landowner, who has patiently come to accept her life of hardship without complaint. One stormy night, she encounters Dorovan, an Elf, a race forbidden to mix with Man. They are irresistibly drawn to one another and discover a mutual need for passion, love, tenderness and sensuality. Their bond is deep and unbreakable, but their liaison is forbidden. I was smitten by the archaic timbre of the writing style and the hardship of the era was well portrayed; as were the beauty and integrity of both hero and heroine - their love scenes are powerfully drawn. Whilst the ending is sad, but inevitable, Valerie sprinkles a dust of happiness over it.
A wonderful, moving story.

If the cover of the book and the trailer don't grab your attention, the first lines will. Valerie Douglas writes a beautiful, moving story that crosses the boundaries of race (Elf and human), class and time. Love conquers all in her world and it is a beautiful sight to behold. Very well written, her attention to detail draws you into the world she's created and leaves you there in the middle of everything until the final words. Very beautifully done!

This was a great story. The characters really pulled me in and made me want to finish the story. The challanges, the secrets the lives, I want more from this author and to find out what happens to the family and if the truth eventually comes out.
