I started my Saturday morning with a VOX article that mentioned Hayden AZ as the most liberal city in Arizona. I had never heard of it so Googled it and found a link to Mark Hahn's photo essay on Hayden - which linked me to his blog and his web site. Fascinated by how he found beauty in the desolation of poverty, I blew 3 bucks on Smashwords to buy Spin Round and spent the rest of that Saturday reading it. Definitely a worthwhile day - I enjoyed the book. A conservative New Englander hits bottom and gets blown out of his meaningless, material life and, possibly, finds meaning in a non-corporate job as a self employed photographer. The ending is a bit of a let down (seriously Mark, was that you?) but I have definitely spent less productive Saturdays and found the author's prose easy to read and the characters compelling. His description of the McMansion lifestyle and the unhappiness and arrogance of the upper class sub-urbanites is spot on.
