This is not another fad diet book and you do not have to be a chemist to understand the reasoning behind the recommended change to your diet that this book champions.
The major theme of “The Oil-Change Diet” is to change the eating patterns of most Americans from a diet high in Omega 6 fatty acids (think potato chips) to a diet that contains a more balanced ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids. A quick look at the first figure in this book (Heart Attack Death Rate and Tissue Omega 6) should be enough to convince even skeptics that reducing the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 in your diet is an important factor for a long, healthy life. Cultures that eat lots of fish, and little or no foods high in Omega 6 (potato chips, nuts, etc.), have a much smaller risk of fatal heart attacks than average Americans. An added benefit of lowering the amount of Omega 6 fatty acids in your diet is a lessening of inflammatory responses, such as arthritis.
That is the recommendation of this book and the reasoning, but it does not stop there. The book makes it easy to lower the amount of Omega 6 fatty acids in your diet by providing lists that contain the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, fish, meats, and dairy products. And, there are lots of nice recipes and a month of menus to get you started on healthy eating habits. Each recipe contains the overall fat content of the dish, and more importantly the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6. Keep that ratio high in Omega 3 and low in Omega 6 (a 50:50 ratio is acceptable) and you will reap the benefits of healthy eating- weight control, lower blood pressure, and a reduction in inflammatory symptoms.
As an added bonus, Dr. Lores does a nice job in explaining the biochemistry of the metabolism of fatty acids. However, it is not necessary to understand the details of the chemical processes; just a review of the first figure in the book should be enough to convince the average person of the benefits of a diet low in Omega 6 fatty acids.
Many truly “genius” discoveries are made by people outside their field of expertise that are able to take a “fresh” (unbiased) look and put things together that are missed by people that are immersed in the field. This book is an example of that: it is a fresh look at nutritional science by someone who had a personal interest in improving his health and enough expertise to understand chemical processes. “The Oil-Change Diet” is the result of a thorough and fresh review of the scientific literature on eating habits.
Read this book, change your eating habits, and you will reap the benefits. I thank Dr. Lores for giving us a way to potentially extend our life spans and experience less aches and pains along the way.
The only negative comment that I have on the production of this book is the lack of pagination.
