I am a big fan of Matt Heppes eternal knight series. Why is that? I guess it is because of the main character. Hadde the Huntress, the master archer and protector of the forest who provides for the people.. She comes from the tribal woodland culture of Landomere, and in part one the forest is touched by a mysterious blight that sucks out the life force of the Forest. Hadde is sent out on a quest to find a cure for the wasting and bring life back to the forest. In her quest she ends up in the medieval feudal rigid class ordered male dominated kingdom of Salador in which women are considered 'weak'. The formidable Hadde manages to hold her own, and in the end, ends the threat of the wasting by slaying the evil wielder of the Orb of Creation Akinos in an epic battle.
This is part II of gthe series, and I must say that I enjoyed it massively.
This time the breach between the tribal woodland culture of Landomere and the feudal medieval Salador grows even deeper as the struggle for the throne of Salador in the absence of the King (indisposed) also has a vast impact on the survival of the land of Landomere. Two little babies are abducted from the forest. One of them is Hadde's own daugther. The other one is imbued by the spirit of the last of the spiridus who give life to the land of Landomere. Once again it is Hadde the Huntress the protector of the Forest to the rescue to save her daughter and save her world.
In the first novel of this series.. Eternal Knight- it was Hadde against the evil Wielder of the Orb of Creation Akinos. In this sequel Matt Heppe shows that `normal' people like the Saladorian nobility with their petty ambitions and courtly intrigues can be just as evil, and even more evil than the evil wielder of a magical artifact who threatens to destroy the whole world. The fierce fight of Hadde to save her world again, and her daughter doesn't come without loss. There is a broken bow on the cover of this novel.. and that says a lot. But there is hope which makes me want to read the next installment of the Landomere series of Hepius as soon as possible.. Get to it Matt
