About Carmela Katzenbach

In between publishing Well-Covered and raising my youngest son, I am searching for an agent to help me get my novel on the market. I am married with four children and two beagle/border collies. My faith is uncomplicated and found in the Bible.

This is an interesting short story with various elements of comedy, suspense and romance gelling together well in a very readable, entertaining package. It would have been even better with longer scenes exploring the relationship between Ashley and Aaron in more depth, as the mother-son dynamic between Ashley and Josh was depicted realistically, and opened the appetite for more coverage of the former relationship.

Suspense kept me reading ... You know It was so well written that I was able to imagine How Ashley is feeling at that moment. For me some words were hard to understand being non-native to English.
Google helps alot ;)

Good part of the story --Happy Ending!

I enjoyed reading Well-Covered. It was suspenseful, a page turner, and I loved the romantic twist. The story and characters were developed well. I could feel the horror when she goes to investigate the lot. I love the ending too.

Well-Covered isn't a bad story, but it's a little rough around the edges and could do with some more work. There are a few errors in the text, nothing major, but they're there. Descriptions vary from the good (such as the ending scene), to the odd ('splash' seems something of an understatement when describing the effects of a tidal wave) to the non-existent (clues as to what all the characters look like were few and far between).
Too many details are just told, including one big dump of information towards the end as Ashley 'recalls' the explanation for all the events, a rather lazy device with which to impart such details and not a very satisfying one for the reader. In fact, the story spurns several opportunities for increased drama. For instance, when Ashley is at the Shabbat service, she has already seen Aaron there, so the reader doesn't get to experience Ashley's shock and surprise at spotting him there. Also, later in the story, Ashley is suddenly clouted from behind and knocked unconscious. The drama might have been heightened if she had been confronted by her attacker first, so the reader could feel Ashely's fear at the predicament she was suddenly in - and also get a better angle on just who this assailant is. He's an important character in the story and yet he's virtually absent from it.
I was also left a bit confused about how the police have pinpointed the villain of the piece to that specific property, yet have taken so long (several days, at least) to search the most obvious place.
All in all, this felt like an early draft rather than a finished story. In its current form it's okay, but there are some glaring weaknesses that need to be ironed out.

I love how the mistery, horror, and romance sense of this short story blend in so beautifully. Well done, my like-minded Sister!!

In just a brief amount of time (7 pages) Carmela manages to create likable lead characters, which is one of the most important aspects of a story (in my opinion). She's also written a riveting plot story that is well worth the read! Carmela has earned this 5 star rating for "Well Covered."
