Fifty years have passed since the glory days of four, young teenage Rogues growing up in the countryside of Co.Doire. Now in the late midlist of summer in the year of 2063, approaching the anniversary of a dear friend, three men in their sixties recap on the story of a friendship that was literally to die for. More
The novel begins in the year of 2073 as the boys are now in their late sixties but as the 17th of August approaches the memories from the summer of 2013 never felt so real. The novel tracks back to that summer following the lives of four best friends, Michael, Tiran, Keelin and Rory as they plan to buy an old stock car between them. The boys hid the car away in Michael’s Granda’s shed, unaware to anyone else. The boys spend their summer fixing the car up in between their social and working lives of the summer.
The boys finally manage to get the car on the road but after a few sightings the police begin to patrol the roads. The boys decide to keep the car hid away for a few weeks. It is then on a night out at a birthday party at their local pub, Farah’s. Keelin decides to take the stockcar due to the fact he has no lift and picks up Rory on the way without gaining permission from Michael or Tiran. Tiran goes mad at him for doing so and takes the keys off him knowing out of the four of them Keelin is always the one who ends up drunk.
At the end of the night Tiran drives the car home. However he sends Rory home with another friend who has a spare seat. Rory goes reluctantly. On the way home Tiran, Michael and Keelin come across the police in the distance so they decided to take a different route home. Panicking Tiran drives rapidly but the boys feel safe knowing he’s the best driver out of all of them. They approach the final turn before Michael’s house. The most famous corner in all of Craigbane for all the wrong reasons. Tiran is approaching with speed, the boys waiting anxiously for Tiran to slow down, eventually he does. They make the corner but are blinded by headlights coming straight for them.
In a moment of sheer heroism Tiran realising the outcome pulls the hand brake and the car hits his side head on. He dies instantly but Michael and Keelin escape with only cuts and bruises. They walk away.
The next chapter has a divine intervention. Tiran is having an outer body experience. He does not realise straight away that his body is lying as no more than a shell in the driver’s seat with Keelin cradling what is left of him and Michael crying and yelling desperately to get his door open.
Tiran’s uncle and godfather Eugene, who died in a car accident when he was eleven appears beside him to lead him away from this worldly place. Before he walks away Tiran asks Eugene how he was able to walk away, how he could leave everyone behind knowing what they would be left to live with. Death is easy.......
Tiran dies in the early hours of Saturday morning, the day before he was to take part in the annual tractor run. The boys decided to continue with the tractor run in memory of Tiran, they all create signs and hang them in front of the bonnets ‘R.I.P Tiran’ and each have a picture of Tiran stuck to the back of their window. With Michael in his Fait, Rory in his uncles’ blue Ford and Keelin in his brother’s Fait the three sit parked in front of the fleet of tractors as they do a minute of revving in memory of their dear friend. Looking from one to the other before turning their eyes to the heavens above hearts are shattered there and then. The small village of Donamangh comes to a standstill as the number three never seemed so unnatural.
The novel then moves back to the present day. The day of Tiran’s 60th anniversary the boys gather up and make the venture to Tiran’s resting place in the same old beat up Peugeot Michael use to drive as a teenager. They spend the evening there until night falls, talking and laughing.
The three young souls in the bodies of old men say their goodbyes to Tiran and make their way to their local, Farah’s pub. It is there, every year since Tiran’s passing that his friends and family gather to remember the boy who died to save the lives of his best friends, the sixteen year old boy who became a legend and whose story is told time and time again.
