I've already read two books in the Maggie Sullivan series, so I'm very much a fan. But this story is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated--the narrative is fast-paced, the dialogue snappy, the Depression Era details spot-on, and, of course, Maggie herself is tough, resourceful, and sarcastic. As I was reading "The Barefoot Stiff," I heard echoes of Chandler and Hammett and many of the other greats of the P.I. genre. If you like your stories hard-boiled and your detectives flawed yet likable, pretty but not girly, then Maggie Sullivan is the dame for you. Highly recommended. Easily the best 99 cents you'll spend this month!
