It’s 1779, and the British are once again besieging Charles Town -- as they did in 1776. Agnes Hawkes Lawrence is recounting to her daughter Irene about the siege of ‘76 as they work on Irene’s needlework sampler:
Their church had set up a program of visiting shut-ins, and Agnes set off with Irene to help the widow Nance. It’s a challenge, since Missus Nance lives at an inne on the outskirts of town...and Agnes’ husband Osborne is off on business for the week. They deliver the stew, and chat with Missus O’Bailey, the innekeeper, as another guest (Mister MacRussell) leaves in a hurry.
As they’re preparing to return home, they hear cannonfire in the distance. Missus Nance begins to prophesy gloom and doom, and suddenly two British seamen burst in – looking for Mister MacRussell. Captain Jay and his henchman, Mister Bryan, hold everyone hostage.
They resist, and pray, and struggle, and lose hope, and regain it, for three days as the bombardment of Fort Moultrie continues. They finally share Christ with their captors, just as Mister MacRussell stages an unexpected return. Mister Bryan is wounded, and Captain Jay is taken prisoner. And a surprise ending reaffirms their faith...
