About David Vernon

I am a freelance writer and editor. I am father of two boys. For the last few years I have focussed my writing interest on chronicling women and men’s experience of childbirth and promoting better support for pregnant women and their partners. Recently, for a change of pace, I am writing two Australian history books. In 2014 I was elected Chair of the ACT Writers Centre.

In 2010 I established the Stringybark Short Story Awards to promote the short story as a literary form.

Goodness! I'm a sucker for stories with a twist and this was such a terrific read. Lots of great stories. One or two I worked it out before the end but most of them were wicked!

I do enjoy reading quality short stories. A shame that on Smashwords and Amazon they are so hard to find, unless you stick with known authors. However, this is now the third Stringybark anthology I have read and I am delighted that these are great stories. This collection (as indicated by the title) contains stories that all have a twist. Congratulations to David Vernon and his team for producing another wonderful anthology - and one that is properly punctuated and grammatically correct, as well as fun, entertaining and thought-provoking. Oh and I reckon John Poole has got it right about Pia Riley's story. WOW!

It took me longer than I'd expected to read ‘Role of a Lifetime’ because the fifth story, Pia Riley’s ‘Beach Ball’ delivered such an emotional punch that I was left bruised like her “dark and broken sky.” It was several weeks before I could steel myself to finish the remaining stories. Once again, David Vernon and the Stringybark judges have chosen a wonderful array of themes, twists and surprises for this collection. Just allow yourself time to recover from story #5.

Really enjoyed reading this array of short stories. They were the perfect length to provide a break from life's mundane chores without leaving me feeling guilty or unproductive!
