YA is not my thing. Anyone who reads my books knows I like my violence uncensored and my blood fresh. However, I enjoyed Mr. West's story. He has a crisp, no-nonsense approach to his prose and wastes little time with back story.
We know from the story the world is full of cannibals. Why? We don't know. Nor, do we need to. Mr. West drops us into the middle of the action and makes the danger to the protagonist palpable. The story progresses well; however, it becomes a bit rushed near the middle and we lapsed into a bit too much tell and not enough show. I would have liked to have seen a bit more depth to the protagonist's costars, but, this is a short story, so I can forgive that faux pas.
At the end, I couldn't tell if Mr. West was attempting to make a statement about violence being evil in and of itself, or simply something inevitable in a world gone mad. Regardless, I found the ending satisfying.
I would love to see Mr. West expand this into a novel or series of novels. I would certainly read them.
