I just finished Chinese Puzzle and was intrigued by the description of Shanghai in the 20's - felt like I had been there. The characters are fascinating. Zepher Davies, the rich American detective, who picks up strays - No Sin, a young Chinese boy who is about to be executed. Monica, a beautiful eurasian, whose aunt believes her capable of murder. They are all involved in the mystery of the stolen jeweled walking staff called the "clouded twilight" leaving murder in its wake. The search for the culprit takes us on Chinese sampans and trans steamers with events that keep us guessing and turning the pages. Besides being entertained, I learned a great deal from this book.
