Ian Bradley was born in Bath, England. In 1965, although still technically a minor, he emigrated on his own to Sydney, Australia. He spent the next ten years supporting himself as a professional gambler while nurturing ambitions to be a screenwriter. In 1975 he decided that if he was to succeed in getting the stories he wanted to tell to the screen, he would have to become a writer/producer. The switch to television bore results almost immediately. His first production was "Prisoner; Cell Block H," a long-running success not only in Australia but also in the U.S.A. and the U.K. This was followed by a string of critical and commercial successes, including the award-winning dramas “The Great Bookie Robbery” and “Embassy”, the iconic series "A Fortunate Life" and a feature film of the late Colleen McCullough’s "An Indecent Obsession."
Ian quickly rose through the ranks of Writer/Producer and Executive Producer to reach the less creative and less fulfilling positions of Television Production Chief and Corporate Executive. Now a “Big Fish” in the industry, by 1989 he was already looking for a bolt hole. Along with his wife, Anne Lucas and family friends, Martin and Pam Brook, he decided to plant and develop a Macadamia farm in the Byron Bay hinterland. Many years later, the Bradleys sold their share of the farm to the Brooks, but not before Annie had created her famous Australian Bush Christmas Cake, based on the farm’s macadamias and native bush fruits growing in the area. The Brooks, meanwhile, had started marketing their own even more famous range of macadamia-based products, under the brand name Brookfarm.
The families remain friends and the stories of their misadventures together have become the stuff of family legend. Prompted by his daughter, Kate, Ian decided to jot down some of the stories for the benefit of his children’s children; these jottings became his first book, “Big Fish to Rubber Ducky.” His next was eco-science fiction, "The Osmium Marbles," and his latest book is "The Parthian Shot", a story of empowerment through revenge, set largely in a women's prison.
Ian lives in Sydney. He is the husband of actress, writer and cake-maker, Anne Lucas; the father of video producer/director, Lucas Bradley, and screenwriter, Kate Bradley; and the grandfather of Charlotte Rose Bradley(aged 11 months). He spends his time writing, traveling and playing golf. His day job is keeping baby kookaburras and blue-tongue lizards from drowning in his modest swimming pool.
