The story of a unique society of oracles struggling with the burdens of old age and the dangers of pollution, madness, and false hopes. More
THE VAPOR IS NEVER WRONG. The colony of New Delphi is the home of the world's only working oracles. Oracles are people with a particular ability to forecast the future, with the aid of mysterious gases that seep out into caverns in the earth. Today, the colony is a popular tourist attraction as well as a business that does millions of dollars a year doing readings for all kinds of customers. The resulting traffic, however, may be inadvertently poisoning the cavern and the gases upon which their way of life depends. Two teenagers, Emory Chamblee and Jake Tollers, want to shut down the cavern and its operations. There's a correlation between the upsurge in tourist traffic and the incidence of madness in the colony, leading Emory to wonder if one is causing the other. Ambition and activism eventually collide, causing an accident that reveals a terrible secret about the colony's leader and threatens to undo the entire foundation of New Delphi.
