Joseph Rivers was born in Lynwood, California.
During his childhood, Rivers moved to Compton, California with his grandmother after his mother passed away to a brain aneurysm when he was three months old—in addition to having an absent father which became a circumstance of his reality. During this time, Rivers expressed a deep rooted desire to write poetry with a perspective that mirrored life through his eyes. His writings were the seeds that he planted, that would one day lead him away from the rough streets of Compton.
Throughout Rivers time at McKinley Elementary and Hamilton Middle school in Long Beach, California— Rivers was bullied for being academically sound. He went on to earn the Principle’s Honor Roll at every award ceremony to come, where he was later recognized by former President Bill Clinton and was awarded the Presidential Honor Roll for his astounding academic ability.
After completing middle school, Rivers enrolled at David Starr Jordan High School in Long Beach, California. He quickly gravitated toward the medical field with ambitions to do research on the brain and find a more viable cure for the type of brain aneurysms that had taken his mother’s life. This determination inspired Rivers to immerse himself in the medical field. However, he never let go of his true love—writing.
Rivers began his professional writing career as an independent author while enrolled at David Starr Jordan High School in Long Beach, California—where he earned a diploma, along with 41 scholarships, including the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship. Rivers later joined the program AIMS (Aspirations in Medical Services) that emphasized his passion for medicine. Rivers began writing his first autobiographical narrative, A Young Man with a Plan while he was just 17-years old. After the book was complete, Rivers faced the daunting challenge of finding someone to publish the manuscript.
During the summer of 2009, Rivers landed a one on one interview on KJLH’s radio show with Steve Harvey’s host Adai Lamar. Due to his constant persistence of wanting his first book to be published, he spoke freely from the heart about his plans to change the world live on the air for thousands to hear. After the heartfelt interview, people from all over the country sent donations in an effort to help Rivers get the publishing done. By the end of summer 2009, Rivers signed a publishing deal with USA Publications and within weeks, A Young Man with a Plan was complete and ready for a national release.
Rivers garnered great success after the release of A Young Man with a Plan, even capturing the attention of the NBA & NFL organizations. Rivers then became a motivational speaker for the Black College Expo and later for the Mothers & Fathers of professional athletes’ humanitarian programs that focused on increasing the awareness of how important education was. Rivers then began to travel with the organizations as he began motivationally speaking in Los Angeles, Houston, New Orleans, Las Vegas, New Port Beach, etc.
Rivers then enrolled into Prairie View A&M University, where he pursued a degree in Biology. He continued to write poetry while in his dorm room. He later submitted the poetry to USA Publications, where he was signed as a new author. His work was rejected, which left the next three years of his writing career to go unnoticed, as he began to rebrand himself. Rivers officially broke all ties with USA Publications in 2013 and made a decision to become a self-published author.
After Rivers completed his tenure at Prairie View A&M University in 2014, he returned to Long Beach, California with the mindset to elevate himself in the writing industry. One year later, Rivers would return fully polished and confident in his work. In 2015, he released his national best-seller, Lost Souls. After the success of Lost Souls critics praised Rivers for his unique style of connecting with readers’ emotional state. He began to live by the mantra he created which encompasses the theory that the goal of great is art is to make a person feel.
Rivers then followed up with the previously rejected poetry book that he had submitted to publishing companies earlier in his career. He titled the piece of art, Free Spirits which went on to become another best-seller within its respective field. Seven months later, he released the distinctly unique poetry book, Lisa Bonet to see how far he could push his creative vibrations, as he let his love for Lisa Bonet fly freely onto his art.
Rivers then began to dig deeper, as he took an eight month hiatus to tap into his love for romance and heartfelt stories. In April 2016, Rivers resurfaced with the national best-selling romantic short story series, Lust is Easy Love is Complicated which to date has over 80,000 downloads globally.
